ABOUT

FOUNDER: CONOR MCCARTHY

Conor McCarthy hails from Limerick and began his piano tuition at Limerick School of Music. Conor then went on to study music at third level and completed a Bachelor of Music Education (B.Mus.Ed) with both Trinity College Dublin and the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama. Conor furthered his studies by obtaining Diplomas in Piano Performance with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) and the London College of Music (ALCM).

Conor is an experienced piano and secondary music teacher and has worked with many schools across Limerick, Dublin and Wexford. Conor originally began teaching the piano in Limerick before moving to Dublin to study. Between 2016 and 2020 Conor was the piano tutor with Knocklyon Concert Band Society and the Dublin School of Music. Now living in Gorey, Conor teaches here with North Wexford Piano Academy and teaches part time with St.Columba’s College in Dublin.

Conor is heavily involved in Musical Theatre and is currently the Musical Director with Gorey Musical Society, Carnew Musical Society and North Wexford Musical Theatre. Conor has also worked with other societies in the South-East area such as Avonmore Musical Society, Oyster Lane Theatre Group and Wexford Light Opera Society. He also involves himself in school productions and in the past has worked with Glenstal Abbey in Limerick and Loretto Foxrock, St. Louis Highschool and St. Columba’s College in Dublin.

Conor also works part time as a tutor with the Irish College of Musical Theatre (IMT) based in Co. Wexford. Conor actively works as an accompanist for examinations, concerts, musicals, weddings, and other various events.

North Wexford Piano Academy was founded by Conor McCarthy and is located in the IDA business park on the Courtown road in Gorey Wexford.

Lessons

Please note: We are currently fully booked for the coming term.

Aim of Lessons:

The aim of lessons will be discussed and catered for each individual student whether that student wants to complete their grades (with RIAM or ABRSM) or if they simply want to play for enjoyment. Regardless all lessons will have learning, progress and enjoyment as the centre focus.

If a student chooses not to go down the exam route that’s perfectly fine but does not mean technique and piano syllabi’s are not covered in classes. Likewise if a student wants to complete their grades, where as the Exam Syllabus is taken with great importance throughout the year, it is not the single primary focus.

Where we can, we like to include a good grounding of harmony, aural, reading, and other keyboard skills needed to become a well-rounded musician.

Our overall aim for students is to be taught correctly, be able to sit down at the piano at any age and be equipped or have the know-how to approach any piece of music they wish to learn. Finally and most importantly, we wish that students enjoy music and playing as much as we do!

Duration

The duration of lessons depends on the level of the student however for the most part individual lessons are 30 minutes long.

Minimum Age

It is encouraged that the minimum age for young children beginning individual lessons is 6 years of age.

Adult Learning

North Wexford Piano Academy caters for adult beginners. It is never too late to begin at music and can be a wonderful new hobby for students at any age or ability.

Piano and Theory Exams

Students if they so choose, can prepare for external examinations in piano or theory with the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) or the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSRM).

Junior and Leaving Practicals

Students can be prepared and guided through their school Junior or Leaving Certificate practical.

Aural and Theory

Aural skills and music theory is incorporated into lessons. External exams in music theory with one of the exam boards can also be arranged.

Piano Accompaniment

Conor can provide piano accompaniment for all instrumental and singing exams, auditions, competitions and performances. Bookings can be made for répétiteur classes or once-off accompaniment sessions at request.

Conor can also provide recordings of accompaniments for home practice use on request.
